Chapter Seventeen

Seated across from Aaron, I began to question him.

I knew that Aaron was an unlikely candidate to be a murderer. I doubted that his girlfriend was an accomplice. She was a scared girl. Now on the hunt for a real murderer, I would have to use my considerable resources—including my growing mystical abilities—to locate and speak to the girl before it was too late. So, with my world upside down, I was forced to make the ultimate choice between helping Aaron first or helping Granny first.

“I need to clear up one thing, Aaron,” I said. “You were walking down the street a couple of blocks from your home when you were picked up by the police. But your dad says you were in church.”

“I was in church, but I snuck out during the service.”

“Why?”

“I smoked a cigarette.”

“Well, I hope you learned your lesson about lying about your whereabouts.” I leaned forward to be closer to his face. “You know this sneaky departure from the church makes it harder to solve your case.”

“I know. I have no alibi, but they have no evidence either. How can I still be charged without forensic evidence?”

“What about gold?”

“Gold? What about it?” he asked.

“Have you ever stolen any?”

“No, ma’am.”

“But you do have some. Right?”

“When you start asking questions about gold, I want to know who you are. Are you Dad’s girlfriend?”

“No.” I shook my head. “I’m going now. I want to meet with Annette.”

“Tell her that I love her.”

“I will,” I said. Goodness, but they were too young to be so serious.

Through it all, I had discovered the identity of one mysteriously wonderful man—Pastor Dan. He was a man I had grown to love and respect. As soon as we resolved the murder case, I would be able to go out on a date with him. At least, I hoped so.

Shortly thereafter, while out looking for Annette’s boarding house where she kept a room, I happened upon a young woman who had teenage thugs tugging at her purse. She was yelling and obviously needed help.

Steeling myself, I took on her attackers, by myself—all six of them. I punched some of them on their chins and others in the ribs, taking them on, one at a time. When I karate-chopped them and kicked them where it counted, they were knocked onto their own butts. Jumping up, they quickly ran away.

Little did I know that this one act of goodwill would introduce me to the answers that I was looking for. I soon entered a very strange world. My new world would be a journey toward unexpected wealth—Dan’s as well as mine.

“What happened?” I asked the young lady. “What could you possibly have in your purse that would be that valuable?”

“How valuable?”

“Valuable enough to have six guys try to take you down and take your purse from you.”

“I don’t know how they knew what I have.” She opened her purse and showed me a bag of gold bars.

“Where in the dickens did you get that?”

“My boyfriend asked me to keep it for him until he gets out of jail.
